70e anniversaire / 70th anniversary of d-day

Colleville, le Cimetière américain / The American cemetery
by Richard and June Gillis

Today, Omaha Beach is very calm and beautiful in the sunshine. It is hard to imagine such carnage took place here 70 years ago. It is a popular spot for horse riding, fishing and sailing.

Thousands of people from all over the World came to the American Cemetery at Colleville to pay their respect on 6 June to the veterans of WWII, both the survivors and the dead. It was a day of high emotion and anticipation, but also tinged with a touch of sadness.

We were privileged to be there. Veterans were shouting across to each other as they met up after many years; families, whose fathers or grandfathers were sitting with the other WWII veterans in the VIP section, were getting restless and excited waiting for Presidents Obama and Holland to arrive. There were also many like us making new friends and swapping stories. Some were attending this ceremony for the fourth or fifth time. You could feel the energy and excitement build as the crowd turned towards the sound of the presidential helicopters arriving: two for the French VIP's and about eight for the American contingent. Security was tight and plentiful everywhere. It was like a scene out of a Hollywood movie as the American support aircraft, black and ominous, arrived followed by three Marine helicopters. It was very impressive.

Obama's and Hollande's speeches were full of colourful and emotional references to the feats of WWII veterans both present and past and to the strength of the Franco-American Alliance.

I felt proud to be an American and a veteran standing with the others and saluting "Old Glory" as the National Anthem was played.

After his speech, our President took quite a bit of time shaking hands and talking to the WWII veterans and wounded veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq before moving off to an observation point overlooking Omaha Beach. As the crowd followed Obama toward the observation point, it gave many people an opportunity to take his photo or a photo of the Colour Guard. Some lovely young ladies had their photo opportunity posing with American sailors!

All active duty branches of our armed forces were well-represented and resplendent in their dress uniforms and ribbons. There was a general feeling of goodwill, pride and comradeship.

It was a day to cherish and to remember always.
